Early and Lower Schools Welcome Authors
May 11, 2026
In April, the Early School and Lower School students welcomed visiting authors and learned about the importance of representation and the power of creativity.

Award-winning author Kelly Starling Lyons visited Doherty and Lotspeich kindergarten through fifth grade students for the annual Lower School Author Visit.
Starling Lyons shared her love for reading and how “Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry” was one of the first books she felt represented by. She told students it inspired her to write her own stories, such as “Going Down Home with Daddy” and the “Jada Jones” series.

Children’s book illustrator and author Amanda Driscoll visited the Early School students on both campuses. She talked about her love of books, read stories, and illustrated characters in front of the students based on their suggestions.
