Opening Ceremony kicks off the school year
On the first day of the 2022-23 school year, fourth through 12th grade students from both campuses came together in the Field House for the annual celebration of the beginning of the year. As part of the annual tradition of selecting one of the Seven Hills values as a focal point for the school year, Head of School Chris Garten encouraged students to come together and celebrate our honesty and integrity, one of the school’s core values. Doherty fifth grader Isabella Jordan, Lotspeich fifth grader Claire Daily, eighth grader Avery Wang, and seniors Graham DeWitt and Anna Papakirk spoke about the school community and gave helpful advice to encourage students to be honest with their classmates and teachers and to practice integrity throughout the school year at Seven Hills. “In a larger sense, integrity is always standing up to injustice and standing up against what is wrong. It means, ‘if you see something, say something.’ If you see someone treated badly or ostracized or excluded, have the courage to stand up and stop it. Integrity means taking a stand and finding a way to make this world a better place,” Garten said.
Seventh graders learn about the Mid-autumn festival
Seventh graders in World Language teacher Mia Wu’s class learned about the Mid-Autumn Festival, which was observed on Sept. 10. The festival celebrates harvest during the full moon and brings the entire community together in joyful thanksgiving. Wu shared mooncakes with her class, small intricately designed pastries that come in different flavors and are given as gifts to family and friends.
Sixth and Seventh grade class retreats
Sixth and seventh graders enjoyed an on-campus retreat while building and strengthening the bonds of their Middle School community. Students spent time playing games, choreographing songs and dances, strategizing during relays, and much more! “Students are making friends with new classmates and adjusting to life in Middle very quickly,” said sixth grade retreat organizer and science teacher Jennifer Licata. Seventh grade retreat organizer and math teacher Carri Haskins said the day enables students the opportunity to get to know one another better while working together and having fun.
Eighth graders finesse perspective drawings
Eighth graders in art teacher Elissa Donovan’s class have been creating their two-point perspective tree houses. “It builds on the one-point perspective they learned in seventh grade. Aside from the two-point perspective, the students are free to create whatever kind of treehouse they want and they get very creative,” Donovan said. Some treehouses were made up of the number seven, while others displayed a sporty or chic design.
Sixth graders analyze cells
Sixth graders in science teacher Jennifer Licata’s class have begun using microscopes to analyze and understand the complexity of cells. Students learned about using magnification and adjustment to find their specimens at close range. “We are learning about cells and trying to get experience seeing what they look like since there are so many different kinds!” Licata said.
