Eighth grade solves chemical compound mystery

Eighth graders used their deduction skills to uncover the names of mystery compounds during Middle School Science teacher Ken Revell’s science experiment. Students used Bunsen burners to safely burn a variety of cotton swabs that had been dipped in different solutions. Some of the solutions were named, while others were not. Students were tasked with figuring out what the unnamed solutions contained. The eighth graders discovered each solution created a different flame color, enabling them to deduce what the potential combinations were on the mystery swabs based on their flame’s color.

Middle Schoolers participate in Real Talk

“Who am I? My Race, My Ethnicity,” was the final Real Talk panel discussion of the school year on April 22. It was preceded with two advisory activities prior to the panel discussion in order for students to familiarize themselves with the topic. During the Real Talk panel discussion, panelists shared their identity as it related to their own race and ethnicity and how they experience everyday life. The panelists were asked to discuss the challenges and stereotypes they face. “Talking about race and ethnicity always feels uncomfortable. I am grateful, and I know that we are lucky to have a safe place where people can share their stories and learn to challenge their own misconceptions. It is often easy for some to assume that only people from other countries or races and ethnicities have a culture. The reality is that everyone in the United States, except for Native Americans, are immigrants or the descendants of immigrants who came here voluntarily or were brought here by force. The Real Talk activities are meant to build inclusivity and belonging. They are intended to recognize and celebrate all identities and people from different backgrounds. You can create an environment where intolerance is not welcome. You can create an environment where only true, kind, and necessary comments are allowed,” Middle School World Language Teacher Jacky Kalubi said.

Six Middle School students competed at the Power of the Pen’s state competition. Students completed three 40-minute writing sessions where they created stories inspired by a given prompt. “It’s a creative way of sharpening their already strong writing skills, by not only competing, but doing it as a team,” Middle School writing teacher and team coach Chris Caldemeyer said. Well done seventh graders Sania Zafar, Lily Fraser, and Brandt Lopez and eighth graders Nina Head, Kaavya Tatavarty, and Grace Guminey!

Eighth Graders learn about citizenship

Speakers from the Intercommunity Justice and Peace Center (IJPC) discussed the complex and emotional path to American citizenship with eighth graders in mid-May. Students answered questions about citizenship and learned about popular immigration myths. The IJPC’s mission is to educate and advocate for peace, challenge unjust local, national, and global systems, and promote the creation of a non-violent society.
