Middle School hosts Global Education Day

The entire Middle School participated in Global Education Day in mid-March. In the morning, students attended a presentation about Ukraine and Cincinnati’s history with sister cities from keynote speaker Bob Herring, president of Cincinnati-Kharkiv Sister City Partnership. Then, students attended a variety of sessions about topics including tchoukball, global health, and yoga. During the afternoon, students competed in an “Amazing Race”-style competition where they traveled around Hillsdale Campus and completed a series of challenges. Students ran with the bulls, constructed a human pyramid, crossed a river, and much more!

Sixth graders host Ukraine Item drive for IYW

The It’s Your World (IYW) sixth grade class organized a donation drive to send supplies to Ukrainians who have been affected by the ongoing Russian invasion. Students designed promotional posters and assigned items to be collected for each division. In mid-March during morning drop-off, students collected items to be delivered to Matthew 25: Ministries who regularly organize Ukraine Aid shipments. “It’s an incredibly tough situation, and I’m immensely proud of our sixth graders for rallying the Seven Hills School community together to help send much-needed supplies and aid to those who have been impacted by Russia’s invasion,” Head of Middle School Bill Waskowitz said.

Seventh graders burst with learning

Seventh graders in teacher Kristin Suer’s class added a spring theme to their lesson as they learned about atmospheric pressure by building vacuums and exploding Peeps! Students controlled the pressure inside their vacuum chambers and steadily increased the internal pressure causing the marshmallowy Peeps to expand. Suer explained how the atmosphere does its best to maintain equal pressure, meaning when pressure increased in the chambers the Peeps expanded. However, to the student’s awe, when they released the pressure the Peeps deflated like balloons.

Eighth graders discuss identity

Throughout March in teacher Laura Clemens’s class, eighth graders examined how different aspects of one’s identity can lead to them being the “odd one out” in society, and how communities can positively support and embrace individuals’ diverse identities. Students read a modern young adult novel with a protagonist who identifies as the “odd one out” in their community and discussed in-depth that protagonist’s experiences, struggles, and successes in small groups. Students also examined their identities and completed a creative project to present a portion of their identity to their classmates. “The unit deliberately uses a student-centered model where students choose which book they wanted to read, served as leaders for their discussions, and then selected from among a variety of creative projects. Discussions and activities encouraged real-world connections and invited students to consider how to make our communities more welcoming to diverse individuals. Overall, we ask students to think how they can promote equity and celebrate diversity in their lives,” Clemmons said.

Middle School student awarded Hauck Scholarship

Congratulations to our Middle School Frederick Hauck Scholarship winner, Ethan Avera! The award is named after Dr. Frederick A. Hauck, who was a world-renowned nuclear scientist, and philanthropist who lived in Cincinnati. He served on the Atomic Energy Commission and worked closely with Albert Einstein. In addition, he was a businessman, explorer, historian, industrialist, metallurgist, nature lover, and humanitarian. Seven Hills established the Hauck Scholarships to recognize students who demonstrate achievement in mathematics or science. Selected students were reviewed by a Middle and Upper School faculty committee that looked at students’ interest in science, math, and their related activities outside the classroom. Congrats to sophomore Dhanush Bearelly, and juniors Christy Baldwin, Shanaya Bharucha, Rohan Nambiar, and Jack Ringel for also being awarded a Frederick Hauck Scholarship!
