Seventh grade Innovation Lab project demonstrations
Seventh graders presented their Exploring Engineering and Design prototypes to family and peers, resulting from their student-directed semester-long journey of crafting solutions for problems they felt passionately about. Some of the projects included: Coukie Co., a vegan protein cookie free of the top 10 allergens, a self-heating blanket that doesn’t require electricity, and a sports net to catch any size ball and prevent it from going into bushes, a neighbor’s yard, and more. Middle School Innovation Lab director Keagan O’Mara said the project helps students strengthen their project management skills, define problems, and assess potential solutions.

11th Annual Day On, Not Off!
Middle School families volunteered at Matthew 25: Ministries during the Middle School’s 11th annual Day On, Not Off! service day to honor Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy. “For more than a decade, volunteers from our Middle School community and beyond have met at local community service agencies to give their time and effort to improving the lives of those less fortunate. Anyone who has had the chance to volunteer in local organizations that help the less fortunate knows the power of prosocial behavior. Aside from benefitting others, actively helping others, simply put, feels good and validates the importance of empathy and compassion,” said Head of Middle School Bill Waskowitz.
Delay the Phone! Parent Meeting
Seven Hills fourth through eighth grade parents are invited to the Middle School’s informational meeting on Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. in The Schiff Center to consider how to collectively encourage healthier and more intentional technology engagement for our students. As part of the Middle School’s effort to support families, Head of Middle School Bill Waskowitz will introduce the Wait Until 8th program at the meeting. Wait Until 8th seeks to connect families who would like to delay giving children smartphones with like-minded families with children in the same grade. We know that each family situation is unique and that there are many approaches to successfully using technology. The Wait Until 8th model is intended only to help reduce the pressure students and parents feel over kids having smartphones.

Seventh grader performs for Lotspeich students
Seventh grader Tennyson Ceron recently performed two classical music pieces on the piano for first through fifth grade students during their Monday morning assembly. Ceron played “Oquirrh Mountains Shining” by Kevin Olson and “La Valse D’Amelie” by Yann Tiersen. After his performance, students asked Ceron about his musical journey, how long it takes for him to learn a piece, and what his favorite piece to play is.
