10th anniversary of Day on, not off
Seven Hill Middle School families volunteered at Matthew 25: Ministries and A Child’s Hope Int’l during the Middle School’s 10th annual Day On Not Off service day to honor Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy. “For more than a decade, volunteers from our Middle School community and beyond have met at local community service agencies to give their time and effort to improving the lives of those less fortunate. For anyone who has had the chance to volunteer in local organizations that help the less fortunate knows the power of prosocial behavior. Aside from benefitting others, actively helping others, simply put, feels good and validates the importance of empathy and compassion,” said Head of Middle School Bill Waskowitz.

It’s your zombie apocalypse world
Using a “My Diplomat” simulation, sixth graders became diplomats for a United Nations country during their It’s Your World class. Students worked together to create and vote on resolutions to help limit the spread of the zombie virus and ensure humanity’s survival during the apocalyptic crisis. Upper School head librarian Megan Whitt facilitated discussions and was happy to report that both sections of It’s Your World came to a consensus and passed resolutions that would likely contain and end the zombie apocalypse. Thanks to Seven Hills sixth graders it won’t be the last of us!

Sixth graders ‘travel’ to South America in Geography class
To learn more about the world, sixth graders in Andy McGarvey’s class selected a country in South America to research and design a once-in-a-lifetime travel adventure, along with a travel agency. Students were given a budget and asked to plan every aspect of the trip, from flights to where to stay, to excursions to cultural sights. Students also researched travel restrictions for each country on the U.S. Department of State’s website.

Seventh graders learn the mechanics of tsunamis
Seventh graders in Kristin Suer’s class learned about the power of tectonic plates. After discovering how tsunamis and earthquakes are created by plates moving in specific directions, students gained hands-on experience by recreating them using graham crackers, icing, and fruit rollups.

Students and Faculty participate in Real Talk
“My Powerful Mind,” was the second Real Talk panel discussion of the school year on Jan. 13. Before the student and faculty panel discussion, Middle School students submitted thoughtful questions about mental health, common misconceptions, access to resources and professionals, and more. Students were also encouraged to introspect about their journey with mental health before hearing from the panelists. During the Real Talk panel discussion, panelists shared their mental health journey and how it may impact their day-to-day lives. Teachers Jacky Kalubi and Kristin Suer moderated the event and applauded the panelists for their bravery in sharing their experiences with their school mates.
