Sixth graders create circuits

During Innovation Lab, Sixth graders, under the guidance of teacher Keagan O’Mara, learned how to use a soldering iron while trimming wires to coil around a piece of metal to complete their closed circuit. Building the closed circuit is the first step for students to study electricity as they conduct a variety of experiments with their closed circuits to better understand the nature of circuits. During class, students were able to immediately test the functionality of their circuits and see if they effectively closed them by lighting up a light bulb.

Seventh graders experience the stock market

Seventh graders are learning first-hand the trials and thrills of the stock market during social studies teacher Doug Huff’s class. After learning how and why the stock market has changed through the last century, students participated in a stock market simulation game. Students strategized how they should diversify their portfolios, and whether they should be more aggressive and increase their chances for higher profits, or be more cautious and decrease their chances of losing money. The students will spend a couple of days following their stocks, with the ability to sell their shares or buy more before the market closes.

Sixth graders strengthen composite painting skills

Sixth graders in art teacher Elissa Donavan’s class are in the process of finishing their animal paintings. Students spent weeks learning the process of creating a painting, such as sketching, control color painting, scaling their reference photos, and transfering sketches to their canvas using graphite and tracing. After finalizing their paintings, students will learn how to create a metal frame for their artwork in the coming weeks.
