Lotspeich celebrates annual Halloween Parade
Lotspeich kicked off early Halloween fun with the annual Lotspeich Halloween Parade, along with the first annual Trunk or Treat the prior weekend. Pre-kindergarteners through fifth-graders paraded around the upper field track to a spooky soundtrack and the emceeing skills of Lower School creative dramatics teacher Russell White, who announced each grade. Some of the many creative, colorful costumes on display included dinosaurs, witches, and superheroes! Missed the parade? Check out our recorded Instagram Live on our Instagram profile!
Kindergarteners learn about agriculture at Benton Farms
Kindergarteners recently experienced a dose of fall fun! Students enjoyed learning more about farm life while visiting Benton Farm in Walton, Kentucky. Students fed and petted goats and cows, went on a hayride, and discovered how weather impacts crop growth.
Second-graders lay words to rest
In a fun lesson that brought together the Halloween spirit and language arts, second-graders in Danielle Necessary and Cicely Knecht’s classes held a funeral for “dead” words in mid-October. Students wrote an obituary for often overused words, such as “like” and “nice,” then shared a list of synonyms they and their classmates could use instead. Students presented obituaries about the dead words during the funeral service, after creating tombstones for the words.
Fifth-graders built habitats for their Spanish class pets
Fifth-graders created miniature habitats for their class pets in world language teacher Megan Hayes’ class. Students used vocabulary while assembling to reinforce their new terms. “The habitat really helps create an environment where students feel empowered and engaged in learning and speaking Spanish. Class pets are a segue to facilitate discussion in the target language. We started with discussions about what type of animal their pet is and naming it. Students also decide where it lives and what it likes to eat and do. We’ll also develop their pets’ personalities using adjectives to describe it,” Hayes said.
Fourth-graders experiment with force and energy
Fourth-graders built bumper coasters to advance their knowledge about force and energy in science teacher Kate LeBare’s class. Students used two marbles, one at the top of the bumper coaster and the other marble at one of three stationary points on the coaster, to test the stationary marble’s ability to stop the moving marble.
