Fifth graders have a flurry of fraction fun

Inspired by January’s snowy weather, fifth graders in teacher Laura OGrady’s class combined snowflakes and fractions into a creative math experience. After designing their paper snowflakes, students estimated the fraction of paper that was removed when they cut their patterns. Students developed and explained their estimation strategies to the class, and learned how to create efficient fraction estimations with unusual shapes.

First graders learn about digital citizenship

First graders continued their yearlong digital citizenship unit in librarian Lori Suffield’s class, by learning how to analyze emotions after being given a series of scenarios involving technology. By exploring what aspects of technology bring them joy (talking to grandparents through FaceTime) or sadness (watching too many videos and missing the chance to play with friends), the students can understand their healthy boundaries when it comes to screen time. The digital citizenship unit is taught to Lotspeich kindergarteners through fifth graders, and cover topics such as finding trustworthy information sources, navigating online friendships, and how to be kind and respectful to others online.

Pre-K learns about insect similarities

Pre-kindergarteners sorted fake bugs into groups after learning about renowned insect scientist Charles Henry Turner. Students compared insects’ and crustaceans’ legs, colors, antennae, and more to determine how the creatures were similar or different. Students were surprised to find similarities between ladybugs and lobsters, along with the differences between a cockroach and a beetle.

First grade celebrates 100 days of school

What would you buy if you had $100? What food would you eat 100 pieces or bites of? If you could have 100 animals, which ones would you pick? First graders in teacher Stephanie Tiller’s class answered these questions as they celebrated their 100th day of school. Students also decorated hats with 100 colored balls, math equations, and more while wearing their 100 bead necklaces. “If I could eat anything, I’d eat 100 chicken nuggets!” one student exclaimed.
