Live from Doherty!

Broadcasting live from the Doherty library, a new class of fifth graders hosted their first Doherty News on Sept. 16. Started last year, the weekly Zoom program delivers school news, birthdays, weather, sports, and an exclusive interview with a teacher to all Doherty students. Fifth graders sign up to be a part of the news crew, attend a brainstorming session, and practice their scripts with art teacher Kacey Watkins, counselor Angie Bielecki, and librarian Jo Schnirring. For the first broadcast, Doherty News field reporter, fifth grader Ethan Markovich interviewed new science teacher Robin Taylor-Fabe about what all grade levels would be learning in science this year.

Civic Garden Center Visits PK2

Pre-kindergarten for 2-year-old students in Laurel Robinson and Julie Brackett’s classes welcomed a gardening expert from the Civic Garden Center. The students learned about gardening and the seed cycle and sang a song about caring for plants. They took turns digging and planting seeds in the garden beds by the PK2 playground. All the students greatly enjoyed the visit.

Unit II Visits Fire House

Unit II students went on a walking field trip to Cincinnati Fire Department Station 23, just down the road from Doherty. They learned about how firehouses operate, the difference between a fire engine and a fire truck, and that Station 23 mostly responds to medical emergencies not fires. Though the fire houses did not have a fire dog or fire pole, the students were invited inside to see the firefighters’ dorms and living area. Thank you for an educational visit, Station 23!

Snake helps with animal lesson

Doherty’s resident snake ambassador William Snakespeare, a ball python who lives in the science classroom, helped Unit I learn about animals. As part of their lesson on different types of animal skin, fur, feathers, and scales, the students in Robin Taylor-Fabe’s science class got to pet William Snakespeare and shared their observations about his scales and how they felt. They also watched him slither around the classroom, under the close supervisor of Taylor-Fabe, to learn about animal movement. William Snakespeare has been at Doherty since 1987 and nearing record old age, with Taylor-Fabe estimating he is between 37- and 43-years-old.
