Doherty welcomes Grandparents and Special Persons

The Doherty Campus had hundreds of special visitors on Nov. 21 for Grandparents and Special Persons’ Day! Students in all grades shared their work and accomplishments as they toured their guests through the school, showing off their academic and musical achievements. Kindergartners shared projects about what they like doing their special persons, Unit I recited poetry they have been learning, Unit II completed activities about what they are thankful for, and Unit III enjoyed a special lunch in the gym with their guests.

Learning about Kindness and Diwali

For the November monthly assembly, Doherty students in kindergarten through fifth grade discussed the Seven Hills value of kindness and learned about Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights.

Doherty and Middle School parent Vanshipal Puri spoke at the monthly assembly about how Diwali is about celebrating family with lights, dancing, and sometimes fireworks. Puri brought in some of his traditional clothing and led the students in a Diwali dance.

Art teacher Kacey Watkins connected the themes of Diwali to the Seven Hills value of kindness, caring, and compassion. The students shared examples of kindness they have seen at school and decorated cards to send to someone as an act of kindness.

Though the pre-kindergarten for 2-year-old students are too young to attend the assembly, they still learned about Diwali when fifth grader Sajni Puri visited their classroom to teach them about the festival and share how her family celebrates.

Thank you to the Ramineni family for bringing lunch for the Doherty faculty and staff to celebrate Diwali.

Balloons over Doherty

Doherty students had their own Thanksgiving Day balloon parade inspired by the book “Balloons Over Broadway” by Melissa Sweet.  Unit II students in Sherri Linville and Julie Guminey’s classes decorated balloons and paraded them throughout the Doherty Campus for their fellow classmates and teachers. Though a few balloons escaped to the skies over Doherty, it was a great way to celebrate the upcoming holiday. Happy Thanksgiving!

Unit I Glimpses into the Past

Unit I students went on a field trip to Sharon Woods Heritage Village, a living history museum, to get a glimpse into what life was like in southwestern Ohio during the 19th century. “We are currently learning about the post, present, and future in social studies, so the outing fit in nicely with our curriculum,” said Unit I teacher Amy Kuhlkavik.

Mindful Minute in Unit II

Each day, after Unit II recess teachers Sherri Linville and Julie Guminey and counselor Angie Bielecki lead students in a mindful minute. Mindfulness helps students reset before their afternoon classes. Students use breathing techniques, gratitude practices, and setting intentions to set their afternoons up for success.
