Women Changemakers in Unit II

For their changemaker projects, Unit II students researched women who made history. Students researched Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, tennis star Serena Williams, activists Rosa Parks, Greta Thunberg, and Helen Keller, and many more. The students designed and created posters about their changemaker. To challenge how they thought about the information they included on the poster, students started working on trivia games about their changemaker. Once complete, the students will present their projects and their posters will be hung around Doherty.

Fourth grader wins Spelling Bee

Fourth grader Henry Liu was crowned champion of the Doherty spelling bee on Feb. 10 for correctly spelling simplicity. The top five finishers from the two homeroom bees, held in December, went on to compete in the school-wide final. Fourth grader Sarah Hassell came in second and fifth grader Lola Fulham-Fitzgeraldcame in third. Other spellers were fourth graders Hansika Malyala, Kishan King, and Leo Kampel, and fifth graders Sophia Liu, Anjali Bhattacharya, Zach Veronica, and Logan Bauman.

Super Bowl Lessons in Unit I

Using the Super Bowl, students in Amy Kulhavik’s Unit I class practiced their history, writing, math, and art skills. They learned about the history of the big game, wrote letters to their favorite football players, and created a construction paper Bengals player for Doherty’s Super Bowl bulletin board. Each student made predictions about who would win the game — all chose the Bengals, of course — and what the score would be. They then used their math skills to graph their score predictions.

Unit II practices dance

Unit II students practiced their popcorn dance in Maria Eynon’s music class. Doherty students build on the dance to “Popcorn” by Hot Butter each year in Eynon’s class adding more difficult steps and movements until it is fully complete in fifth grade. Unit II was focusing on learning steps, timing, rhyme, and focal walls.
