Brief Word—March 18, 2022

As the spring holiday rapidly approaches, we have enjoyed a flurry of special activities in all four school divisions.

Last Friday, the Upper School hosted its third Civic Engagement Seminar of the year, this one focusing on equity and representation in the media. Students heard from our keynote speaker E.R. Fightmaster, a Seven Hills alum who, as a star on “Grey’s Anatomy,” is the first nonbinary character to appear in the long-running program. After that fascinating presentation, students engaged in a series of activities designed to address the question “how does who we see represented on the screen influence our view of the world?”

That same day, the Middle School students participated in their annual Global Education Day, which began with a moving presentation from Mr. Bob Herring, president of the Cincinnati-Kharkiv Sister City partnership. Mr. Herring shared what his organization has been doing to help relieve the widespread suffering in Ukraine and expressed his gratitude for our own school-wide efforts to provide support through Matthew 25: Ministries.

In addition, both Lower Schools are also holding special events this week. At Lotspeich, grades three, four, and five performed a major musical concert featuring recorders and Orff instruments as well as the third grade’s Instrumental Recital during the weekly assembly. At Doherty, the annual Cultural Connections Week involves an extended multimedia study of the culture of Costa Rica as well as the annual Fifth Grade Musical, performed in The Schiff Center.

All these special events — along with the coming of spring — have made for a lively week on both our campuses!

All the best to you and your families. I hope you all can enjoy a well-deserved rest over spring break.
