Brief Word—December 17, 2021

It’s difficult to convey just how full school life can feel in the closing week before an extended holiday!

Our Upper School students have been busy preparing for exams and waiting eagerly for college news. Middle School students, coming off some wonderful winter performances, are wrapping up a host of special projects in anticipation of the end of the second quarter. And on our Lower School campuses, students have been feverishly rehearsing for holiday celebrations.

One of the highlights for me was attending two “demonstrations of learning” in our second and fifth grades. At a special assembly Thursday morning, second graders students proudly displayed their elaborate models of bridges from all over the world. Visitors circulated through the displays in Founders Hall while students explained the challenges involved in engineering these marvels of human ingenuity.

Later that day, the fifth graders hosted a ZOOM film festival to share the video trailers they had put together to celebrate some of their favorite books.

Obviously, traditional tests, quizzes, and essays have an important place in school life, but there’s nothing like the excitement generated when students can show off what they learn in new and creative ways. What a wonderful preparation for the adult world!

All the best to you and your families over the holidays and in the new year!
