Drawing and Shading Drills in Upper School Art

Students in Daniel Vance’s general art class are working on drawing and shading drills. The students are using clamp lights that cast hard light and create shadows on the simple objects they are drawing, including cones, spheres, and cylinders. Vance said the exercise will allow the students to improve upon their abilities to build images using value, which is the levels of light and how they are shading the lightness or darkness on paper.

Rhythm in Music

As part of her signature music curriculum, Doherty music teacher Maria Eynon taught Unit II students how to embody music, rhythm, and movement during a recent lesson. Eynon worked through a number of dances, including the popcorn dance and the first steps of “Cotton Eye Joe,” which is a complex set of hand and step movements.

One-point Perspective

Students in Elissa Donovan’s seventh-grade art class created drawings of the perspective one would have if standing and looking up at surrounding skyscrapers. The approach is called one point perspective, in which the images appeared to be towering over the spectator. “We are learning that perspective is a tool artists use to create an illusion of depth,” said Donovan. “We are building on their concepts of perspective to help create a more 3-D and realistic piece.”

Improv at the DAC

Sixth-graders in Jacob Hauser’s theater class are learning all about what happens when creativity and spontaneity take the stage. Spread out at different points in the DAC Black Box, the students participated in an activity called, “Yes, And,” in which students make quick statements, one after the other. Each statement has to build on the previous statement but not repeat that statement, said Hauser. “It helps students to feel comfortable with spontaneity and takes the pressure off being on the spot,” said Hauser. “We like to start with a basic, boring statement like, ‘I am going to bake cookies’ and watch as the statement escalates into something bizarre and amazing like, ‘My pet squirrel is going to take a submarine to the ocean for a playdate with his whale friend.'”
