Unit II becomes costume designers

Doherty Unit II students in Lower School drama teacher Natalie Bird’s class created their own animal costumes to bring the children’s story “Caps for Sale” by Esphyr Slobodkina to life! The story follows a cap-selling peddler who wears all of his hats on his head. One day, he falls asleep and a troupe of monkeys steal all but one cap. The peddler uses a variety of tricks to win back his wares, all in vain, as the animals mimic everything he does. In a bout of frustration, he throws his own cap on the ground and walks away, and soon the animals follow suit. The peddler rejoices and quickly returns to collect all of his hats. Students picked from an assortment of animals including monkeys, rabbits, and mice, to measure, trace, and cut out fabric to assemble for their animal headbands while discussing what they loved about the animals they were recreating.
