Students Soon to Use New Professional Backdrop in Film and Animation Class
Ever heard of a cyclorama? It’s as cool as it sounds. Think the white backdrop of a typical photography studio mixed with the corner-less sweep of a skateboarding arena. The newly built structure in Upper School art teacher Jason Knarr’s film and animation classroom in the Donovan Arts Center is grand and almost complete. Knarr, who used annual fund dollars specifically designated for the art department, said students will be able to use the cyclorama for film and animation projects this spring.
Studying General Composition in Unit III Art
Doherty Unit III students recently learned about portraits and the general composition of the face in Kacey Watkin’s class. “We did some practice drawing the human eye to make it look more realistic and discussed how different values create the appearance of the nose,” said Watkins. Watkins said the students also learned how to properly use drawing pencils to create different values within their drawings of the face.
Building an Imaginary Structure in Creative Dramatics
Lotspeich Second-graders in Russell White’s creative dramatics class recently participated in a dynamic acting lesson called, “Smaller.” The physical activity requires someone to first become the largest part of the building, the second person to become something just a little smaller than the building, the third, a smaller object, and on and on until the smallest item in the building is being represented by a student actor. The students replicated the building and its contents, working together to reflect the objects the best they could using movement and body configurations. White asked the students the replicate parts of a dentist’s office and airport, spurring the students to become the airport itself, an airplane, seats on the plane, on down to the snacks in baskets on the plane. White said the activity allows students to improvise with movement and work from a level of confidence on the stage.
Practicing for the Spring Concert!
Middle School chorus is practicing a number of songs for the school’s upcoming spring concert. In this image, students are singing, “Let the River Run” by Carly Simon. The students will perform that and several other songs with choral director Tina Kuhlman and accompanist Lynne Miller. Stay tuned to learn more about details for the concert!
