Exercising Creativity in Ceramics
As a final project in Upper School ceramics, art teacher Daniel Vance’s students employed the collectivity of the skills they have learned throughout the 2020-21 school year to build small, intricate ceramic pieces. “They were given a choice to sculpt people or animals and they all chose animals,” said Vance. “The idea was to encourage the students to draw from everything they learned in the class this year and synthesize it to create a ceramic sculpture they wanted to keep.” In addition to the review that included slipping and scoring slab, pinchpot, coil building, and sculpting, students also learned new skills, such as glaze selection and slump molding, said Vance. “It was a good refresher because it helped students to form and cement the knowledge they gained this year,” said Vance.
