Incredible Instrumentals

A round of applause to the Middle School and Upper School instrumental ensembles! On Dec. 2, the sixth grade ensemble kicked off the Middle School concert with “Celebratory Fanfare,” “Russian Fantasy,” and “Resident of the Lords.” The seventh grade ensemble started its set with “El Toro,” and also played with “Cyclone,” and “Whiplash.” The eighth grade ensemble closed the show with a wide range of musical stylings, including “The Wellerman,” “The Simpsons,” and “Final Countdown.” Later in the afternoon, the Upper School symphonic and contemporary ensembles dazzled their audience with their incredible musical prowess. The symphonic ensemble played three arrangements, “Russian Sailor’s Dance,” “Pinball Wizard,”  and “Pass The Hot Sauce.” The contemporary ensemble played three arrangements, “Road Song,” and “Isn’t She Lovely,” as well as “Cantaloupe Island.” The two ensembles combined talents for two arrangements, “This Christmas” and “Iron Man.” The afternoon was an amazing culmination of a semester of hard work. Congratulations to our student musicians and instrumental teacher John Rising!

Wonderful Choruses

In December, the Middle School and Upper School choruses amazed audience members in The Schiff Center with beautiful selections that spanned languages, tugged at heartstrings, and brightened spirits. On Dec. 6, the Upper School chorus performed a wide array of songs during their winter concert. Audience members were enthralled with the vocalists’ songs, from “Il Est Bel Est Bon” to “Sea Fever” to “Al Shlosha D’varim.” On Dec. 12, the Middle School choruses stunned their audience with lively and passionate performances. The sixth grade chorus performed four delightful songs,  “Celebrate the Season/Patapan,” “Eight Lights for Hanukkah,” “Minka,” and the Animaniacs’ “Noel.” The seventh and eighth grade chorus sang a variety of songs which ranged from a traditional Latin song, “Et in Terra Pax,” to a German carol “In Winter” to the Hebrew folk song “S’Vivion.” Congratulations to our incredible performers, vocal music teacher Tina Kuhlman, and assistant choral teacher and accompanist Esther Nam!

The concerts took place over two days with pre-k headlining the concert with help from Units I-III and the Doherty Strings for their families, teachers, and pre-k for 2-year-old classmates earlier this week. Kindergarten through Unit III held their main concert this morning at The Schiff Center.

In late November, Upper School theater students attended “A Christmas Carol” at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, and after the show, discussed the show with its associate director, Bridget Leak.
