Upper’s Masterclass in Theater Presents “The Laramie Project”

February 2, 2026

The Upper School’s Masterclass in Theater students will perform “The Laramie Project” in Schiff 102 this upcoming weekend.

Under the direction of its three student co-directors, juniors Javier Beatty and Rory Bauman, and senior Vivian Brown, the class has worked hard to bring this documentary-style production to life.

In the late 1990s, the Tectonic Theater Project in New York City traveled to Laramie, Wyoming, to interview residents about the 1998 murder of 22-year-old Matthew Shepard and how the tragedy impacted the town.

The interview transcripts were then transformed into “The Laramie Project,” which presents a layered and deeply emotional portrait of a community’s reaction to the hate crime/murder of a young gay man in Laramie, Wyoming.

Note: “The Laramie Project” explores themes of homophobia, tolerance, and the human capacity for both cruelty and compassion. This production is recommended for ages 14 and older due to language and content.

Though the Friday, Feb. 6, show is sold out, tickets are still available for the Saturday, Feb. 7, show at 2 p.m.
