Second Graders Learn about Governance

December 3, 2025

To begin their lesson on civics and government, Doherty second graders learn about the foundations of community life, good citizenship, and rights and responsibilities. Teacher Sherri Linville creates a real-world connection for the students through establishing classroom rules and viewing their homeroom as a community.

“The topics feel meaningful and accessible because students were simultaneously creating classroom rules and discussing what is means to contribute positively to their homeroom communities,” Linville said.

Once that understanding is built, the second graders learn about government. In small groups, the students create a learning poster about their topic, such as the different levels of government, how taxes work, the roles of public officials, and more.

The groups share their topic and posters with their classmates allowing them to teach and learn from each other.

“The progression allows students to see how the ideas they practiced in the classroom apply to their broader community, country, and world,” Linville said.
