Real Talk Program

March 11, 2025

The Real Talk Program was created by Middle School world language teacher Jacky Kalubi and Middle School science teacher Kristin Suer as a way to further build inclusivity and belonging among Middle School students.

A “Real Talk” consists of a panel with a mix of students and faculty who discuss how a particular topic, carefully selected by Kalubi and Suer, impacts them. Panelists volunteer to answer questions submitted by Middle School students; they review their answers with Kalubi and Suer prior to the event to ensure they understand and are comfortable with their talking points. As the panelists rehearse their answers, Middle School students learn more about the chosen topic through special Advisory lessons leading up to it.

“Jacky and I launched the Real Talk Program to create meaningful opportunities for students to hear firsthand from individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences. By listening to these stories, students feel empowered and deeply connected to their learning, realizing that their peers — and even their teachers — share similar challenges and experiences,” Suer said.

According to Suer, one of her favorite things about the Real Talk Program is witnessing the audience’s engagement — their focused expressions, curiosity, and attentiveness as they absorb the panelists’ powerful words and emotions.

“It’s incredible to see how these stories resonate with them. I also enjoy the interactive and engaging Advisory lessons leading up to the presentation, as they set the stage for meaningful discussions,” Suer said.
