As part of the sophomore class’ reading of “The Namesake” by Jhumpa Lahiri, the English department welcomed a panel of parents and a junior student to speak about cultural identity and their experience with immigration.
The novel focuses on an Indian family who has moved to America and struggles to maintain the balance between their Indian roots and new American life. Touching on themes of the novel, the student moderators asked questions about the importance of food, identity, and immigration across generations.
The panelists shared their reasons for coming to the United States, their cultural shock, and how they started connected to family.
