Doherty Day of Service Brings Books and Blankets to Local Community
February 2, 2026
The Doherty Hives took part in the second annual Doherty Day of Service, called Books and Blankets. Kindergarten through fifth grade students collected games and books and made blankets for the residents of St. Margaret’s Hall.

St. Margaret’s Hall is just down the road from the Doherty Campus. Counselor Angie Bielecki explained how the Seven Hills values of kindness, caring, compassion and commitment to community include the residents as well.
When asked at the kick-off for the Day of Service what service means to them, the students said helping others in any way you can and thinking about other people before yourself.
Students have visited the residents of St. Margaret’s Hall multiple times this year to trick or treat, perform their Winter Program, and recite poetry.
After receiving instructions from art teacher Kacey Watkins, the Unit III Hive leaders cut the blanket pieces and helped the younger students with knotting the blankets together.
Once each Hive made two blankets, the activities continued with a read-a-thon that had students visit themed reading rooms. Students read with their Hives members in the dark with flashlights, around a campfire, and on inflatables at the beach.
