Upper Schoolers Share Challenge Experiences

December 3, 2025

To show the eighth graders all the possibilities they can have at the Upper School, four students shared how they approached the Challenge Experience requirement of the Experiential Learning program. Upper Schoolers have three pathway options: service learning, concentration, or an independent project.

Senior Halsey Ha-Martinez completed more than 100 hours of community service hours at multiple organizations she was passionate about.

Senior Noah Ring took the concentration pathway, focusing on nursing. He received his State Tested Nursing Assistance (STNA) license and spent more than 100 hours studying nursing and working as an STNA.

“It taught me a lot about what working in the medical profession is like and showed me that it is what I want to do for my career,” Ring said.

Seniors Caleb Katz and Sabrina Donovan took the independent project pathway. Katz trained for and completed an Olympic length triathlon, while also researching the science behind endurance racing.

Donovan designed and created her own jewelry. She explained the reasons she decided to design jewelry, including an opportunity to work on a creative art outside of school.

The Upper Schoolers encouraged the eighth graders to start thinking about something they are passionate about that would fit one of the pathways.

“It is easy to let the Challenge Experience get away from you, but it is really such an amazing experience to get to learn something you want,” Ring said.
