Tech Tip: A Balanced Diet of Technology Consumption
March 3, 2026
According to Dr. Shimi Kang, people should think about consuming technology like a balanced diet. There are three categories of technology consumption:
- Healthy tech: positive experiences that build connection, education, or creation
- Examples: healthy podcasts, mindfulness apps, master classes, robotics, coding, FaceTime with a family member, music, and much more
- Junk tech: limited video games and scrolling social media
- Examples: limited mindless scrolling, limited video game playing, limited video/YouTube watching, and more
- Toxic tech: comparisons, FOMO, cyberbullying, addiction
- Examples: tech where after you spend 10+ minutes on it, you feel anxious, angry, sad, isolated, or more
How are you and your children consuming the majority of technology? The goal is to spend the most time consuming healthy tech, limited time consuming junk tech, and no time consuming toxic tech. See a visual of Dr. Kang’s tech solution plate below and click the image to learn more.
