Scuba Diver, Doctor Visit Doherty Students

Pre-kindergarten for 2-year-olds students in Julie Brackett’s class welcomed two guests to teach them about the ocean and what happens during a doctor’s appointment.

As part of their study of the ocean, the class welcomed a scuba diver. Current Upper School parent Paige DeBuys shared her love of scuba diving and showed students photos she had taken of underwater creatures.

DeBuys brought her underwater camera, flippers, scuba vest, tank, and mask to share with the students in their classroom.

“We know that often young children have fears of sounds, and seeing a scuba diver in a mask can be scary,” Brackett said. “Our plan was to show our students that scuba divers are people who wear equipment to enjoy the ocean and respect ocean life. I am very grateful to have parents in our community who offer to teach alongside us.”

PK2 parent Dr. Emily Daughtery taught the students what she does during doctor’s appointments. The students looked at X-rays of bones and used a stethoscope to listen to each other’s heartbeats.
