Nurturing the Whole Child: Seven Hills’ Portrait of a Learner in Action in our Lower Schools

In the bustling hallways and vibrant classrooms of both Lotspeich and Doherty, something transformative is taking shape. Our teachers are bringing to life our new “Portrait of a Learner” that honors the complete development of each child through three interconnected dimensions: mind, heart, and community.

This holistic approach reflects our deep understanding that true learning extends far beyond academic achievement to encompass intellectual curiosity, emotional intelligence, and meaningful connections with others. As our teachers weave these elements into their daily instruction and classroom culture, they’re witnessing remarkable growth in their students’ confidence, empathy, and love of learning.

Cultivating the Mind

Lower School teachers are fostering intellectual growth by creating learning environments that celebrate curiosity and critical thinking.

In all of our classrooms, pre-kindergarten through fifth grade, our teachers encourage students to ask “why” and “what if” questions, turning everyday moments into opportunities for discovery. Teachers design hands-on investigations where students hypothesize, experiment, and reflect on their findings, whether they’re exploring the properties of matter in science or analyzing character motivations in literature.

By incorporating multiple learning modalities and allowing students to demonstrate understanding through various means — from artistic expression to verbal presentation — teachers ensure that every child’s intellectual strengths are recognized and developed. This approach builds confident learners who see challenges as opportunities rather than obstacles.

Growing the Heart

Emotional development receives equal attention as teachers help students understand and manage their feelings while building empathy for others.

Morning meetings provide safe spaces for children to share their experiences and practice active listening, while classroom discussions about characters they’re reading about help students explore different perspectives and emotional responses. Teachers model emotional regulation and guide students through conflict resolution processes, teaching them to recognize their feelings, communicate needs respectfully, and find solutions that honor everyone involved.

Social-emotional learning is seamlessly integrated into academic work, whether students are collaborating on a math problem or discussing the feelings of historical figures, ensuring that heart development happens naturally throughout the day.

Building Community

The community aspect of our Portrait of a Learner comes alive through collaborative projects, peer partnerships, and service learning opportunities that connect students to their classroom, school, and broader world.

Teachers structure group work that requires genuine interdependence, where each student’s contribution is valued and necessary for success. Classroom jobs and leadership roles give every child opportunities to contribute meaningfully to their learning community, while school-wide initiatives like buddy programs and Hives connect students across grade levels. Through age-appropriate service projects and discussions about local and global issues, students learn that they are capable of making positive differences in their communities.

As our Lower Schools continue to relate our teaching and learning to Seven Hills’ Portrait of a Learner, the integration of mind, heart, and community, we believe we will be a part of creating graduates who are not only academically prepared but also emotionally intelligent, socially conscious, and ready to contribute meaningfully to the world around them.
