Middle Schoolers Head to State for MathCounts Competition

March 2, 2026

On Feb. 21, the Middle School MathCounts team competed in the regional competition at the University of Cincinnati. Seven Hills placed third overall, and four students will compete at the state competition on March 7.

MathCounts presents an array of problems requiring creative insights and flexible use of many skills, Middle School math teacher Ed English said.

A MathCounts competition consists of four rounds which challenge students’ speed, accuracy, and logic in algebra, geometry, and probability.

  • During the Sprint Round, students have 40 minutes to answer 30 questions without a calculator.
  • In the Target Round, students receive four pairs of problems and have six minutes to complete each pair, assuming the use of a calculator.
  • During the Team Round, students work together in groups to answer 10 questions in 20 minutes, and they may use a calculator.
  • In the Countdown Round, students have a maximum of 45 seconds per problem without a calculator. This round is optional at the school, chapter, and state level.

Congratulations to eighth graders Kalkin Ban, Arjun Katneni, Ethan Wang, and Henry Liu! We’ll be cheering you on during the state competition.
