Doherty Pre-k Thinks Outside of the Box

October 6, 2025

Doherty pre-kindergarten students gathered around art teacher Kacey Watkins as she read “Not a Box” by Antoinette Portis to them. The story follows a bunny figuring out ways to make their cardboard box something completely different, like a volcano, a car, and even a rocket ship.

After finishing the story, Watkins encouraged her students to think of ways to turn their box (a cardboard square on a piece of paper) into “Not a Box” using markers, shapes, and other materials. Students squealed with excitement as they announced what they were creating.

“A tree,” said one student.

“A rocket ship!” exclaimed another.

We can’t wait to see how they continue thinking outside the box.
