Taking on PPE Concepts in Bioengineering Class
Brian Berning’s bioengineering students took a proactive approach to the global discussion around PPE (personal protective equipment) shortly after Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced that schools in the state would move to remote learning in mid-March. Using what they have studied about face masks, Berning’s students tackled the current designs of surgical masks and face shields. Using 3-D printers and animation technology, the students were able to design and 3-D print adaptive devices for masks, based on existing models. The students incorporated design thinking to render prototypes they thought would conform more comfortably to the face of the user. Their focus is based on their research that many surgical masks are not comfortable for the users. Berning said this important work will be an ongoing learning experience for his students.
