Sixth-graders Band Birds

As part of their ongoing study of birds and ornithology, sixth-graders in Jennifer Licata’s science class had an in-depth lesson on the animals in early December. Dr. Dave Russell, who runs the nonprofit bird rescue program AREI, taught students how to band birds. With the help of people from AREI, they gently caught birds behind the Middle School in fine bird netting. Russell showed students how to band the animals and take their measurements. The birds were released once the examinations were finished. Students will continue their lessons on birds, which culminates with Bird Day in the spring.
