Sixth-graders Band Birds
For the 10th straight year, Drs. Dave and Jill Russell visited the sixth-grade science classroom to capture and band birds that visit the classroom bird garden. The Russells collected a variety of data on each bird including age, weight, length of skull and wings, and sex of the bird when possible, and discussed the importance of gathering this data to better understand the overall health of bird populations. Each bird was then banded with an identification number and the data is recorded for the bird along with this ID number. As federally licensed bird banders, the Russell’s data is shared nationally. Students gained a better understanding of field data collection and its use in conservation efforts.
