Seventh-graders Debate “Of Mice and Men”

Seventh-graders in Mandy Hayes’ English class recently read John Steinbeck’s classic novel “Of Mice and Men,” taking an interesting approach to discussing the book’s complicated ending. Students stood on opposite sides of Hayes’ room, or right in the middle if they were undecided, to debate the novel’s sad ending. Hayes asked students, “In your opinion, did George do the right thing and why?” Hayes facilitated the discussion and told students to explain their feelings. She also asked the ethical questions posed by the book, which led to strong debate between students.
