Important skills I want to teach my students
Critical thinking. I try to emphasize “big picture” questions rather than memorization of small, specific facts. With the advent of the internet, facts are readily available at just a second’s notice. Teaching students how to assess and use these facts is what I strive for.
Teaching methods to reach these goals
I ask many open-ended questions to which there might be many “right” answers. Students learn that it’s more about crafting an argument and supporting it rather than finding one right answer.
My favorite projects
During our study of the Enlightenment, we make commercials “selling” the ideas of these thinkers. This project is fun because it allows students to be more creative and in watching them we actually learn about this time period. In addition, I like the Tournament of Greatness that we participate in along with the ninth grade. It’s competitive and I’ve found that students gain great experience with public speaking and debate.
What I like best about teaching at Seven Hills
My colleagues. Although we all have a variety and strengths and interests, I have always felt that I’m part of a team in my teaching and that we can all work together to make a better experience for our students.
