Middle School Students Compete in Spelling Bee

The Middle School recently hosted its schoolwide spelling bee with 16 competitors from all three grades. “This was one of the most competitive years that we have ever had for the bee,” said organizer and seventh-grade English teacher Mandy Hayes. “After 15 rounds, there were still four students left in the competition! Due to time constraints, we had to pause the bee and finish it when we returned to campus on the Monday after winter break.” The four students who advanced to round 16 included eighth-graders Margaret Tenney, Dhanush Bearelly, and Mikul Wyer, and sixth-grader Rohan Kulkarni. After the 17th round, Margaret emerged victorious after spelling her championship word, “Connecticuter.” Other words she spelled correctly were sympatric, charactonym, exorcist, collateral, and deference.  Margaret’s next step will be to take the online bee in early February to see if she qualifies for the Regional Bee in March. “The Middle School is very proud of all of our spellers!” Hayes said.
