Learning the History of Mosaic Art

After studying the history of mosaic art, including the roots of Grecian art and understanding the work of Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi, Doherty fourth-graders embarked on a project of their own. Doherty art teacher Donna Breitenstein asked students to choose a particular design. Then, the students selected glass and ceramic tiles, placed the tiles with glue, and applied grout with a sponge. Breitenstein said the use of tiles as a medium allows students to view art on a broader spectrum from utilitarian to pure artform.
