Latin Students Prepare for Field Trip with Ancient Comedy

Upper School Latin students recently attended a Cincinnati Shakespeare performance of Stephen Sondheim’sA Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.Sondheim’s musical is based on ancient Roman comedy. To prepare, students in Marcie Handler and Katie Swinford’s honors Latin classescame together to read Plautus’ play Pseudolus, with each student portraying a different character in the play. “Plautine comedy is some the oldest Latin literature that we have,” Swinford told students. The class discussed the tropes involved in ancient Roman comedy.
