In Search of the First Amendment

As part of their unit on the First Amendment, journalism students combed through old issues of the New York Times, Cincinnati Enquirer, and USA Today to find examples of the First Amendment in articles, photos, and headlines. Students were asked to select an article that showcased one or more of the five freedoms in the Amendment and write a 150-word statement explaining why. The First Amendment is something we benefit from every day in the United States. “It’s so easy to take it for granted,” said journalism teacher Karla Dejean. “It also offered a good discussion point for the importance of our student-run online newspaper, Canvass.”
