Illusionary Art in Third Grade
Third-graders in Hillsdale Campus art teacher Jody Knoop’s class are designing their own optical illusions. The project begins with students drawing two or three big hearts on a page, followed by a grid that does not cover the heart shapes. The students color the panes of the grid as a checkerboard using two or three colors. The students use markers, chalk, and pencil in their projects. “They will later add shadow to make the hearts look as if they are standing out from the grid giving the image a 3-D effect,” said Knoop.
