Fourth-graders Partner for Poetry

Fourth-graders recently buddied up to produce original poetry with 16 lines in AABB format. Substitute teacher and Doherty parent Molly Franz first prepped students with the use of poetry in the book, “Antarctic Antics,” by Judy Sierra, then let the students loose during class in the library to tap into their own creativity. A partner poem is a poem you write with a friend. Students started out their poem by writing the first line of the poem. They then passed the paper to their partner. “The tricky part was the lines must rhyme,” Franz told the students. The lesson is part of a larger unit on the structure, rhythm, and sound of poetry.
