Fifth-graders Bake at Home

Fifth-graders in Kate LaBare’s science class recently took part in a tasty remote learning lesson. LaBare asked students to put their chemistry skills to the test by baking a delicious treat of their choice for their families. “It’s the same things we’re doing in the classroom, but instead of scientific combustionsand slime, I’m going to invite you to make a recipe for your family,” LaBare said to students via video. LaBare said through baking, students practiced their lab skills, including carefully measuring ingredients, following directions, and cleaning up their area when they were finished. Students practiced safety procedures while they were baking. Students also wrote a reflection about what they learned from baking. She called the lesson an “exercise in being precise.” “Chemistry is all around us, including in brownies and cookies and cakes!” LaBare said.
