Enlightening Art

Doherty fifth-graders are carrying on the tradition of designing and making ceramic lamps with Doherty art teacher Donna Breitenstein. The cross-curricular art project brings art and science together in one lesson, said Breitenstein. Students first design and make their hand-built bases. They then decorate their commercial lampshades to coordinate with their bases. The extensive art project culminates with students wiring their lamps. “It’s wonderful to see their faces light up as well when they turn them on for the first time,” said Breitenstein.
