Eighth-graders Learn African Recipes in French Class

Jacky Kalubi’s culminating lessons for her eighth-grade French students were a real treat! To conclude their study of Francophone Africa, Kalubi taught students how to cook African recipes via Zoom. Students made a variety of recipes, including bitumbula (ripe banana beignets), biscuits sables (sandy cookies), and saladu nebbe (black-eyed pea salad). In addition to learning new recipes, which were written in French and English, students converted grams to cups and Fahrenheit to Celsius. “Students absolutely loved the experience,” Kalubi said. “Some said they had never made anything presentable or edible, and they were proud!”
