Upper Schoolers Take Part in Experiential Ed Day

November 3, 2025

To take their learning and knowledge out of the classroom and into the community, Upper Schoolers spent the morning of Oct. 31 taking part in Experiential Ed Day.

“Some of the most important learning happens when we engage directly with the world around us,” Director of Experiential Learning Karen Glum said. “When you observe something firsthand, we learn in ways books and lectures can’t teach us.”

Activities were divided by grade level. The freshmen went on a trip to the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden organized by their biology teachers. The sophomores worked on campus with the Poverty Liberation Collective to build on the work they did last school year with the Ozanam Center.

The juniors experienced the “Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away.” exhibit at the Cincinnati Museum Center. The seniors had a variety of on-campus activities, like working on college applications with the college counseling department or taking part in class-bonding activities.

“Through Experiential Days, students practice transferring the knowledge and skills from their classes to real-world situations involving service, field studies, authentic simulations, and real-world problem solving,” Upper School Head Rick Tate said. “As adults, most of us learn more by doing than simply studying, and we’re excited to extend the same opportunity to our students.”

While the students spent the morning with the grade level, the entire Upper School came together for the afternoon’s Halloween activities, planned by Student Government and 7UP.

“Beginning our day with music and donuts and ending with games reminds us that joy and celebration are important community building values as well,” Glum said.
