Butterfly Studies in Pre-Kindergarten for 2-year-olds
The pre-kindergarten for 2-year-olds class, taught by Julie Brackett and Nikki Ravenscraft, recently learned all about butterflies. Students studied the insect through many lessons. “We studied the life cycle of the butterflies in every domain within our classroom,” said Brackett. “In math, we counted caterpillars. We read stories every day about caterpillars and butterflies, with a focus on The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle and other informational books. Our pretend area was a butterfly garden. We made our own butterfly wings to make believe we were be butterflies.” Students even observed caterpillars as they made their transformation from caterpillar, to chrysalis, to butterfly. “Some students were very interested and made sure to check on the progress in the cup or cage as soon as they entered the classroom each morning,” Brackett said. Children released the butterflies they had watched grow over two weeks.
