In traditional fashion, Lotspeich art teacher Jody Knoop’s fifth-graders designed structural lamps. Knoop said the project brings together design thinking and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and a lot of imagination. Students work through the process of planning and sketching their ideas, then form their lamps in 3-D using newspaper, tape, and plaster gauze. Later, wire and lamp parts are added, said Knoop. The students come up with a wide variety of subjects, from Mickey Mouse to unicorns to zoo animals and many more wonderful ideas. Knoop said her students are always excited to start this project. “Some have been thinking about it since first grade,” she said. She also likes this project because it taps into skills and knowledge that her students have been taught throughout their years at Lotspeich.
