Blending Art and Robotics
In the spirit of American sculptor Alexander Calder, fifth-graders on the Doherty Campus used Lego WeDo to rig their artwork. Doherty art teacher Donna Breitenstein first worked with students on a mixed-media project involving circus animals and structures associated with circuses. Breitenstein then presented Cirque Calder, a well-known art piece involving wire sculptures that Calder rigged to move in an animated fashion. The students then worked with Breitenstein and Assistant Head of Doherty Tracy Hickenlooper to incorporate a robotics component into the circus art project. The students built and used a Lego brick from the software, WeDo 2.0, to code and program movement of their ci rcus structures, which was managed using their iPads.
