A Metropolitan Approach to Vowel Blends

As a culmination of a unit on vowel teams in phonics, Doherty first-graders created their very own Vowel Town—a place full of words with vowel teams! During their remote learning class, Amy Kulhavik’s class learned how to recognize and use letter combinations that represent unique vowel sounds to build and decode words. The students then demonstrated their knowledge by constructing a map full of words, with illustrations or creations highlighting this skill. “The students are so excited to start working on making their Vowel Town spectacular,” said Kulhavik. “Using markers, paint, construction paper and even Legos, students have exercised their creativity to showcase their vision!” Kulhavik said students will share their finished designs during an upcoming all-class Zoom meeting.
