A glimpse into learning at Doherty

Our pre-K through grade five Seven Hills Doherty School, located in East Walnut Hills, remains true to the legacy of one of Cincinnati’s oldest independent schools, Miss Doherty’s College Preparatory School, founded in 1906, which prepared students to keep pace with an ever-changing world. A mix of beautiful historic buildings and newly constructed facilities, Doherty provides a convivial environment in which student learning is active, creative, experiential, and challenging.

Through Doherty’s Individually Guided Education (IGE) program, your child absorbs language arts and math skills, working comfortably at his or her own pace with peers who share interests and common skills. This child-centered approach allows teachers to shepherd students in a careful and appropriately-challenging way through their early learning. The IGE philosophy recognizes individual strengths and talents and promotes diversity of thought.

At Doherty, we offer multi-age learning communities—Unit II (grades 2-3) and Unit III (Grades 4-5)—a practice that broadens opportunities for your child’s social and academic group and weaves her learning into a larger context. Each unit is taught by a team of teachers who collaborate to plan and coordinate lessons, discuss the needs and progress of each child, and design a curriculum that’s as engaging as it is enriching.

The math experience at Doherty culminates in a yearlong lesson in economics, in which the Unit III students run the school store, managing inventory, coordinating ordering and pricing, scheduling personnel, and communicating with business associates. They learn to handle money as they make cash deposits and begin to see the relationship between marketing strategy and success as they calculate profit and loss.

As your son or daughter progresses through Doherty, the adventurous learning continues. Students examine tiny life-forms under a microscope in the Faran Hall Arts and Sciences Building or climbs the steps into the darkness of the Mars Room, where they and their classmates devise an environment that might sustain life on another planet.

Doherty students are academically engaged and fun-loving children, working and playing with equal enthusiasm and dedication. Their success is our greatest reward, and our teachers feel privileged to share in their journey.
